A New Camera

I ordered a new camera online last week from Wolf Camera. It was because I had been spending time reading and oohing and ahing over blog spots like 7MSN and Shutter Sisters and Dog Photographer Erin Vey, and many more, who tell stories with gorgeous photos and words. What an inspiration! And then I ran into various photo challenges - like 9 photos every day for a week, or a photo a day for a year. Just thinking about taking photos on a regular basis started me noticing the little details that were overfamiliar and therefore invisible parts of my daily life. All of a sudden the autumn leaves brought down by the wind and rain were sidewalk art. Union station was not just a huge building to be rushed through to catch the 5:25, but a collection of beautiful architectural details.
I will use this blog to track the renewed attentiveness I hope to gain by viewing part of my life as a series of pictures. Hopefully along the way I'll also get better at taking pictures, too.
So here we go. Day 1.

Weezie has definite preferences about where and how far we walk. She also "sees" things I don't see. She takes specific detours on the paths. I suppose she smells something that needs to be avoided. It would be cool to have her set of sensors sometimes, like when Merlin transformed Arthur into a bird or a squirrel. So what would appear - a big coyote urine "Do Not Trespass" sign? And then maybe I would understand why dogs just have to roll in the rankest of all odors. Yesterday at Fourth Lake, we saw a bunch of small birds dive-bombing a red-tailed hawk. They weren't just harassing the hawk, they were making contact - hitting the hawk so hard that it juddered in flight. It was amazing. They were too high for me to be able to tell what the attackers were but they were about the size of robins or blackbirds. Car Psychosis

After a beautiful walk at Raven Glen yesterday, Gracie and I came back to a car which seemed alternately to be dead or possessed. My always reliable car wouldn't start. At the same time it made weird little rhythmic sounds and lights which didn't stop when I turned the key off. Robert thought maybe the computer brain had a psychotic break. And our always reliable USAA roadside service also let us down. First they got the address wrong and dispatched help from hundreds of miles away. After we corrected that, the wait was again over an hour. So Gracie and I finished our walk a little after noon and Robert (who bless his heart came to get me in his car and waited for the service person) didn't get home until almost 4. Not the day either of us had planned.

Seven Pounds

We spent New Year's Eve watching the movie, Seven Pounds What a good movie! I commented that it was a "little" movie, like they still produce in Europe, but you rarely see from the U.S. I wasn't surprised when I found out that the Director, Gabriele Muccino, is Italian. When I say "little," I mean "little" as in the trivial little things of daily life, the little happenings that are sewn together to become our lives over time. No need for explosions, shootings, wars.... As in definitely not Independence Day . Not that I disliked Independence Day . It's just that the balance between wonderful "little" movies and the blockbusters has been off here for years. So rent it if you get a chance. And don't forget the kleenex. And if you don't like it, just watch it to enjoy Rosario Dawson's beauty and vulnerability.
